The Aurora Marathon follows a scenic loop route through the Akureyri region in North Iceland, starting and finishing in the city center. The course winds through coastal landscapes, valleys, and small villages, offering runners opportunities to witness the Northern Lights if conditions align during the winter morning race. The terrain features gentle rolling hills with consistent elevation changes throughout the 42.2km journey.
Winter conditions with frequent wind, snow, or sleet possible. February offers extended darkness with 8-10 hours of darkness per day, creating optimal Aurora viewing conditions. Road surfaces may be icy; winter running gear essential.
