The Big Island Marathon starts in Hilo on the windward side and travels south along the Kona coast, showcasing Hawaii's volcanic landscape and diverse ecosystems. Runners experience coastal ocean views, lava fields, and the transition from tropical rainforest to drier Kona conditions. The course is relatively fast despite moderate elevation changes, with most of the challenge in the latter miles due to increased heat and sun exposure on the exposed Kona side.
Warm tropical conditions with possible light rain in the morning. Windward Hilo side starts cooler and wetter, transitioning to dry Kona conditions with strong sun exposure in the afternoon.

The Big Island Marathon was founded in 1984, during the golden age of mass-participation running. Now 42 years old, it has established itself as a beloved fixture in Hilo, growing from its early editions into a race with genuine character and loyal following.
The fastest time ever recorded at the Big Island Marathon is 02:21:47, set by Mauricio Mendez in 2010. Every year, new contenders line up hoping to challenge that mark on the streets of Hilo.
The Big Island Marathon crosses terrain shaped by volcanic forces — ancient lava flows, craters, and rock formations that remind you the earth beneath your feet is very much alive. It's an otherworldly backdrop for 42.195km of effort.
