The Stockholm Marathon was founded in 1979, during the golden age of mass-participation running. Now 47 years old, it has established itself as a beloved fixture in Stockholm, growing from its early editions into a race with genuine character and loyal following.
The fastest time ever recorded at the Stockholm Marathon is 2:10:11, set by Jared Kipkoech Bett in 2014. Every year, new contenders line up hoping to challenge that mark on the streets of Stockholm.
The Stockholm Marathon route is one of those courses where runners forget their pace and reach for their phones. The scenery through Stockholm and its surroundings has earned this race a reputation as one of the most photogenic in Europe.
The Stockholm Marathon finishes inside the 1912 Olympic Stadium — one of the oldest Olympic venues still in active use. Entering the stadium tunnel and emerging onto the track for the final 300 meters, with the crowd amplified by the enclosed architecture, is one of the most dramatic finishes in marathon running.
